Health Outcomes and the United Nations Guidelines
for the Alternative Care of Children

The Child Welfare League of Canada (CWLC) and UNICEF Canada hosted an exciting webinar series in May and June 2012 to inform and discuss within the child welfare sector the value of the United Nations (UN) Guidelines on the Alternative Care of Children (2009) in our policy and practice.

The UN Guidelines for the Alternative Care of Children, welcomed by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child and the UN General Assembly in December 2010, represent a global consensus on the best practice in this area, informed by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. They set out desirable orientations for policy and practice and seek to ensure that children do not find themselves in out-of-home care unnecessarily and that the type and quality of care provided is appropriate and based on the normative rights, specific needs and best interests of the child concerned.

Webinar audiences were comprised of federal and provincial policy makers, healthcare workers, child welfare professionals, police services, lawyers, educators, researchers and many other CWLC and UNICEF Canada partners.

This webinar series is now completed. Please feel free to download and view webinars and/or slides at your leisure. Share them with your colleagues!
